The jig is up. People are starting to realize you’re not a rancher, an outlaw, or a vigilante. You had a good run. From 2015 to now you’ve been wearing wide brim felt hats with reckless abandon. Pumpkin patches, cider mills, and pennant races have all been inundated with them. Our fashion intern has let us know that this hat is going the way of the Han Solo vest/riding boot trend of 2013. Which is thankfully extinction.

If you own these hats you should be celebrating this development. This marks the end of a universally inconvenient accessory to wear. Have you ever tried to get into a car with a wide brim hat? It’s a huge pain in the ass. You can’t even sit down without taking the hat off and putting it on the dash. There’s a reason the farming and ranching community has adopted the ball cap. Also you can rest easy knowing you’ll no longer be mistaken for The Man with No Name.

The West has always been romanticized due to its history of lawlessness and ruggedness. Not because of its history of mimosas and Instagram-worthy frittatas. A wide brim hat does a great job of protecting you when you’re herding range cattle or engaging in a running gun fight. But it is relatively useless for your 0.3 mile walk to brunch. What’s the use of a wide hat if you’re wearing it in overcast weather anyways? If it’s warmth you seek go with something functional, perhaps a beaver fur Cossack hat.

So get that Stetson onto eBay while it still has market value. You can use the money earned towards the next thing that makes you look like all your friends.
